Bariatric Surgery – Effective option for morbidly obese people

According to WHO, India is the third most obese country in the world after US and China. Obesity is spreading like an epidemic and especially targeting the younger generation, who are more into a sedentary lifestyle. Numerous reasons are associated for its high prevalence and considered to become a major reason for serious and life-threatening diseases.

Obesity can lead to type II diabetes, heart stroke and also different cancers including colon and breast cancer. In fact, various studies show a link between obesity and pancreatic cancer. Moreover, this condition can also severely damage a person’s quality of life by leaving them immobile and trigger depression.

How do you know whether you are overweight or obese?

Obesity can be easily judged by calculating Body Mass Index (BMI), which is the measure of the body fat based on height and weight of a healthy individual.

Anyone between a BMI of 25-29.9 is classified as overweight and individuals with a BMI of 30 and above are classified as obese.

Surgery solution for obesity

Weight loss surgery also known as bariatric surgery in Delhi has become the most common solution for individuals especially for morbidly obese.

It is performed by surgeons using laparoscopy technique and is considered to be a safe and effective method to lose weight. Within 2-3 years of surgery, a patient can experience approximately 60-80 per cent of total body weight depending upon the procedure that has been chosen.

Moreover, along with weight loss, additional health issues including diabetes, sleep apnea and diabetes are also reduced and in some cases completely treated. 80 per cent of people feel that they need fewer medications or completely discontinue with all of them

Different types of bariatric surgeries

Gastric bypass surgery, which is also known as Roux-en-Y is the most common type being performed on patients since 1960’s. Through this surgery, weight loss occurs as a result of two different mechanisms:

      •    A small pouch is created that reduces that amount you eat
      •    Second procedure is done through bypassing a small amount of intestine that leads to earlier release of gut hormones that makes you feel less hungry.

This procedure allows patients to lose six to eight kilograms of weight every month and total weight loss is 60-80 percent of excess body weight.

Where should you undergo bariatric surgery?
